NMS –  New Medicine Service has been found to increase the number of patients who are adherent to their treatment by about 10%.¹

The New Medicine Service (NMS) was the fourth Advanced Service to be added to the Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework; it commenced on 1st October 2011.  The service provides support for people with certain long-term conditions newly prescribed a medicine to help improve adherence to the prescribed medication regime. This leads to better patient outcomes, reduced readmittance to hospitals, reduced medicine wastage and increased patient education, awareness and self-management.

The service consists of two consultations with a pharmacist, the first is within one to two weeks of being prescribed the new medicine to discuss any concerns the patient may have and ensure they know how to take the medicines correctly. The second consultation happens at one month, to follow up and check that the medicine is still being taken and the patient has no further issues. Any issues or concerns raised will be reported back to the patient’s GP.

What medicines and conditions does a patient have to be on to be eligible for the NMS service?

Four conditions/therapy areas were selected to be included in the initial rollout of the New Medicine Service (NMS). These are:

  • asthma and COPD;
  • type 2 diabetes;
  • antiplatelet/anticoagulant therapy; and
  • hypertension

The rationale for selection of the therapy areas/conditions was twofold: first, the evidence from the original proof of concept research, and secondly on the basis that these are areas where community pharmacists are best able to demonstrate the value of the service.

For each therapy area/condition, a list of medicines has been agreed. If a patient is newly prescribed one of these medicines then they will be eligible to receive the service, subject to the pharmacist being able to determine that the medicine is being used to treat one of the above conditions in circumstances where a medicine can be used to treat multiple conditions.

NMS Medicines List Factsheet

Can NMS only be offered on NHS prescriptions issued by GPs in England?

No. The NMS can be offered to any patient presenting a valid NHS prescription for a medicine on the approved list of medicines.

Can I provide the NMS to a child? Is there a minimum age for provision of the NMS?

Yes. But, the patient must be competent to give consent to receive the service and to share information as required by the consent arrangements in order to be eligible to receive the service.  There is no minimum age, but pharmacists will know that the younger the child, the greater the likelihood is that they would not be competent.

Are patients who are prescribed more than one new medicine at the same time eligible for more than one NMS?

No.  The NMS should cover all new medicines prescribed at the same time.

How much will a pharmacy get paid if it completes a greater number of NMS interventions than the 80% target figure for its prescription volume band?

There are four target payments for the NMS (20%, 40%, 60% and 80%). Pharmacies will be paid each month for the highest target they achieve, irrespective of the actual number of completions it may achieve.
